On Friday, May 17, 2013, the Metheny Music Foundation awarded its annual music camp and summer studies scholarships at Lee’s Summit City Hall. Lee’s Summit, MO is the hometown of 20-time Grammy winner Pat Metheny and his brother Mike, who is the Foundation’s chairman.

Metheny Music Foundation awards are given to qualifying Lee’s Summit students in the fields of band, jazz, orchestra, vocal, “and any other area of music where the student shows passion and potential,” said Mike Metheny. “And if possible we try to let the recipients pick which summer session they would like to attend.” Since 2007 the Foundation has helped more than 20 students attend selected camps throughout the Midwest and as far away as Texas, Michigan and Boston.

“2013 is also the first year we have awarded a college scholarship,” said Mike Metheny. “That has always been one of our goals.”

Metheny Foundation scholarship recipients for 2013 are:

  • Angela Holmes (cello)
  • Justin Nitz (trumpet, French horn)
  • Tanner Qualls (voice, multi-instrumentalist)
  • Trevor Todd (voice)
  • Lindsey Wendleton (alto saxophone)

Patrick Graham (voice) was presented with the 2013 William R. and Lorene Metheny Knight Award, the Foundation’s first college scholarship, at the Lee’s Summit Symphony Family Pops concert on March 9.
