On Friday, May 7, 2010, following his performance at Kansas City’s Uptown Theater, Grammy award-winning guitarist and Kansas City native Pat Metheny was joined backstage by his brother and trumpeter Mike to award the Metheny Music Foundation’s annual music camp and summer studies scholarships. The Metheny Music Foundation is based in nearby Lee’s Summit, the brothers’ hometown.
Metheny Music Foundation scholarships are given to qualifying Lee’s Summit students in the fields of band, jazz, orchestra, vocal, “and any other area of music where the student shows passion and potential,” as the Foundation’s board has previously stated. Mike Metheny said, “And if possible we try to let the recipients pick which summer session they would like to attend. This year those choices include camps at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and Columbia, the University of Central Missouri, the University of Kansas, Northwest Missouri State University, and the University of Arkansas.”
Metheny Music Foundation scholarship recipients for 2010 are:
- Matt Bowers (percussion, Lee’s Summit North High School)
- Justin Cline (violin, Lee’s Summit West High School)
- Lizz Hougland (violin and composition, Lee’s Summit North High School)
- Quinn Mosier (piano and string bass, Summit Lakes Middle School)
- Jason Ringer (drum major, tenor sax and bassoon, Lee’s Summit High School)
